Aristotle believed that through experiencing these intense emotions, such as fear, pity, and sadness, the audience or participant could achieve a sense of emotional purification and renewal. This concept is often associated with the effect of tragedy in Greek drama, where the audience's emotional response to the events on stage would lead to a cathartic experience, leaving them feeling cleansed and uplifted. **
